Avelo Airlines, an ultra-low-cost carrier based in Houston, has agreed to operate deportation flights for the Department of Homeland Security out of Phoenix-Mesa Airport starting next month. The contract is unconventional for a commercial airline because the federal government relies mostly on private charter companies.

An airline known for operating ultra-low cost flights out of smaller U.S. airports has signed an agreement with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Immigration Control and Enforcement agency to carry out deportation flights.

Avelo Airlines, a Houston-based budget airline, plans to begin carrying out deportation fights from Mesa Gateway Airport in May.

Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons said the agency is effective at removals but it faces growing logistical hurdles due to the number of migrants in custody.

We need to get better at treating this like a business, where this mass deportation operation is something like you would see and say, like Amazon trying to get your Prime delivery within 24 hours,” Lyons said.
