Flight cancellations at Hamburg Airport after a surprise strike by workers have affected more than 40,000 passengers.

The airport in Germany’s second largest city said the one-day strike, called over pay and conditions, began earlier than expected “without any notice.”

Staff at German airports are set to begin a walkout that could ground thousands more flights on Monday - after only 10 of more than 280 departures and arrivals went as planned on Sunday.
