New court filings reveal an inmate at an ICE facility in Tacoma used a sweatshirt to scale a perimeter fence and escape last week.

The ICE facilities where Columbia University graduate Mahmoud Khalil and Georgetown University fellow Badar Khan Suri are held have a history of reported abuse and inhumane conditions, experts say.

ICE reported that the man is from Venezuela and escaped from the Northwest ICE Processing Center in Tacoma on March 26.

Washington state lawmakers are seeking greater oversight of private detention facilities like the ICE center in Tacoma, as immigrant rights groups report a sharp rise in the number of people detained there.

Sgt. John Correa with Tacoma police said in a phone call that South Sound 911 received a call from the facility Wednesday at about 7:30 p.m. reporting that someone in custody had escaped. He said officers responded to assist in conducting an area check, but no one was located.

The Tacoma Police Department was notified Wednesday night that someone in custody at the Northwest ICE Processing Center had escaped.
