Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay, a singer who performed on hits such as “When a Man Loves a Woman” by Percy Sledge and helped shape the sound of the Grateful Dead in the 1970s, died on Sunday in Nashville.

Donna Jean Godchaux, who sang with the Grateful Dead throughout the 1970s, has died at the age of 78.

Before her years with the Dead, Donna carved out a stellar career as one of the South’s most in-demand session singers.
