Federal regulators have closed an investigation into what went wrong when a SpaceX Starship spacecraft — part of the most powerful launch system ever constructed — exploded during a January test flight.

The Federal Aviation Administration said on Friday it cleared the SpaceX Starship vehicle to return to flight operations while an investigation into the January 16 Starship Flight 7 mishap remains open.

The FAA has given its approval for the next flight of SpaceX’s Starship even while the investigation into the failed previous flight continues.

SpaceX is slated to launch its Starship for the eighth time from Boca Chica, Texas, Friday, though plans could be thwarted if the FAA fails to give the green light.

The eighth flight test of Starship is preparing to launch as soon as Monday, March 3.

SpaceX will launch its Starship megarocket for the eighth time on Friday, February 28. The news came via SpaceX CEO, Elon Musk, who posted a short message on X saying simply: “Starship Flight 8 flies Friday.”

According to the FAA’s current operations plan advisory, the launch window for the eighth test flight of Starship—the largest rocket to ever fly—opens Monday at 6:30 p.m. EST. SpaceX confirmed that in an update Thursday. The company had previously been aiming to fly Friday.

SpaceX has received approval from the U.S Federal Aviation Administration for Flight 8 of its Starship megarocket, which is targeted for Monday (March 3).

The test flight will be a repeat of what SpaceX hoped to achieve on the previous Starship launch in January, when the rocket broke apart and showered debris over the Atlantic Ocean and Turks and Caicos Islands.
