NEW YORK (AP) — New York and North Carolina have begun to reopen beaches that had been closed due to Hurricane Erin, which sent strong winds and dangerous waves across the U.S. East Coast.

Hurricane Erin ready to unleash its power on North Carolina's Outer Banks

According to a 5 a.m. ET advisory from the National Hurricane Center on Aug. 20, Erin is located about 455 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, with maximum sustained winds near 100 mph with higher gusts.

Outer Banks evacuation orders have been lifted. Visitors may return starting Sunday.

Though “extreme caution,” is advised when using the roads of the Outer Banks, officials are dropping the standing evacuation orders.
