In a move that could provide insurance for Tanner McKee and make things difficult for Kyle McCord (rookie) and Dorian Thompson-Robinson, the Eagles are trading for Vikings quarterback Sam Howell. The Howell trade comes hours after former Eagles second overall pick, Carson Wentz, worked out for Minnesota ahead of the roster cuts.

Carson Wentz is back in the NFL and Sam Howell is on the move again. The Minnesota Vikings have signed Wentz to back up quarterback J.J. McCarthy and traded Howell to the Philadelphia Eagles. The reigning Super Bowl champion Eagles are sending a 2026 fifth-round pick and 2027 seventh-rounder to Minnesota for Howell and a 2027 sixth-rounder.

The Vikings moved on from Howell so they could sign Carson Wentz to a contract, as Wentz will be the No. 2 quarterback behind J.J. McCarthy. This made Howell expendable. The Eagles needed to add depth to their quarterback room after Tanner McKee's finger injury,
