The Morehead-Patterson Bell Tower is a functioning bell tower located on the campus of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC). It is a 172-foot-tall tower with a Roman numeral clock built-in on each of the four sides of the tower.

The tower is topped by a nine-foot clock face on each side and is surrounded below by a hedge and lawn. The tower’s belfry originally contained a carillon of twelve manually operated bells, which are now mechanized. Inside the arcade at the tower's base are plaques honoring the donors’ families.

As the oldest Carolina Alumni student group, Order of the Bell Tower (OBT) serves as the official student ambassadors and tradition keepers to the University. Through events and services, OBT strives to connect past, present and future Tar Heels.

The 172 foot tower is a functional bell tower capped by a pointed spire. The top of the tower houses the bells and an observation area. The base of the tower is a covered archway, with open access through three arches on each side.

Aug 18, 2024 · Morehead-Patterson Bell Tower. Rising 172 feet, the Bell Tower was built in 1932, a gift of John Motley Morehead, Class of 1891, and Rufus Lenoir Patterson II. The university dedicated the bell tower on Thanksgiving Day, 1931.
