Gunter Demnig, a German artist, started the Stolperstein project in 1992. A Stolperstein is a small concrete cube about 10 cm across topped with a brass plate. The plate is inscribed with the name and life dates of an individual persecuted during World War II. Demnig wanted to commemorate victims at the place where they last lived or worked freely before being deported or murdered.
