The Austro-Hungarian naval ship SMS Donau was built as a reconstruction of an earlier vessel, with construction occurring from 1888 to 1894. Launched in June 1893, the ship was used for cruises, including one in 1896 with Archduke Franz Ferdinand to Egypt. In 1906 she was transferred to Šibenik as a quarter ship for Naval Cadets.
