This stone from Morocco’s southwest coast is a fragment of Banded Iron Formation, specifically Jaspilite. It’s an ancient, dense sedimentary rock with alternating layers of iron-rich material and silica. This smooth, water-worn beach pebble is Brecciated or Mottled Jasper or a highly altered volcanic rock. Its deep reddish-brown colour comes from iron oxide (hematite), common in jaspers and volcanic rocks. The olive-green patches are probably Epidote or Chlorite, minerals formed by altering calcium-rich igneous rocks.
