To celebrate the start of Black History Month, Porchlight recognizes Black artists who have made history in the theater. These are only a few of many. ✨Juanita Hall was the first Black performer to win a Tony in 1950. ✨Michael Harris was the first recorded Black producer on Broadway. At only 26 years old, he co-produced “Checkmates” which featured Denzel Washington as he made his Broadway debut. ✨The August Wilson Theatre became the first Broadway theatre to bear the name of a Black playwright i
