Do you recognize this sound? Considered by many as the announcement of spring, this distinct, loud, high-pitched “peep” is the call of a spring peeper. More often heard than seen, these very small, pale-brown frogs can be recognized by the X-shaped mark on their backs. #WildlifeWednesday | NYS Department of Environmental Conservation

How do you define the term "spring peeper" 🐸? 1⃣ Any frog I hear in the spring 2⃣ Anything peeping in the spring 3⃣ Pseudacris crucifer 4⃣ Any frog, I am chaotic and possibly evil 5⃣ Stop it, I live in the west 🎥 Megan Seymour/USFWS. 🔊🐸 Spring peepers are known for their high-pitched mating call, a sound they repeat about 20 times a minute. But did you know that the faster and louder they sing, the better the chances of attracting a mate? 💕 What do you think about this peeper’s chances? #WildlifeWednesday | West Virginia Division of Natural Resources

The Spring Peepers are still going strong. A sound of spring, the chorus of peepers is the sound of the male frogs calling to the females to mate. Only male peepers can sing. They are nocturnal insectivores that are only about one to one and a half inches long. What a sound from a tiny frog! Their calls have registered up to 90 decibels about the level of a lawn mower! These frogs are common but the loss of wetlands is impacting their environment. #springpeepers #peepers #watershed #wetlands #gr

Hear that?! It's a sweet chorus of spring peepers! These tiny amphibians, no more than 1'' long, begin singing in early spring to attract future mates. The males typically start their "peeping" sounds in March up until June. The warmer the weather gets, the more mates they can attract so they can reproduce. Fun fact: female peepers lay their eggs singly (aka one at a time), attaching them to submerged vegetation. A female peeper can lay up to 1,500 eggs! So, next time you are out exploring, keep

Spring peepers are coming out of hibernation making their distinct chirping sounds. 🐸 Have you heard them? DYK, due to the spring peepers' permeable skin, they are highly sensitive to pollution. Because of this sensitivity, spring peepers are good indicators of the health of their surrounding environment. Peepers = healthy water and forest! | New Jersey Forest Service
